What is the role of dinoflagellate functional traits in algal blooms in Guanabara Bay?

Science / Life Sciences

This project investigates how specific characteristics of dinoflagellates, microscopic organisms found in the bay, contribute to harmful algal blooms (HABs) in Guanabara Bay. By combining water quality analysis with advanced DNA sequencing techniques, we will identify key dinoflagellate species and characterize their size, growth patterns, and nutrient utilization strategies. This data will be correlated with the occurrence and intensity of HABs to develop a predictive model. This model will be a valuable tool for understanding, predicting, and ultimately mitigating HABs in Guanabara Bay, contributing to the protection of marine biodiversity, public health and the local economy.
