Yuri Gomes Lima

Mathematics

Yuri Gomes Lima, an adjunct professor at the Federal University of Ceará, is a mathematician focusing on chaos theory. He completed his master’s in mathematics at the same university before pursuing his doctorate at the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA). During his time at IMPA, he also undertook post-doctoral fellowships at three prestigious institutions: the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, the University of Maryland in the United States, and the University of Paris-Sud 11 in France.

His research is an effort to uncover mathematical systems characterized by chaos. Outside of his academic pursuits, Yuri is a music enthusiast who enjoys playing the guitar. He also practices yoga and kitesurfing. When he needs a respite from his scientific endeavors, he finds solace on the beach, his personal sanctuary of tranquility.

Symbolic Dynamics and Non-Uniform Hyperbolicity
Science / Mathematics

Is it possible to predict whether it will rain tomorrow or next week? The simple answer is no. Despite the precision of measurements, the anticipated behavior can significantly deviate from reality. This unpredictability, often referred to as chaos, precludes the quantitative prediction of a system’s evolution. Consequently, we turn to qualitative explanations, such as estimating the average number of rainy days in a year. My research delves into this qualitative perspective, examining non-uniformly hyperbolic models that display asymptotic contraction and expansion. These models are highly versatile, finding applications in diverse fields ranging from biology to sociology. To comprehend these models, I employ symbolic dynamics. By altering coordinates, we can substitute trajectories with sequences of symbols. This transformation simplifies the study of qualitative properties and aids in detecting the presence of chaos in nature.

Jangada Dinâmica
Science / Mathematics

The Jangada Dinâmica project is designed to foster integration among researchers specializing in dynamical systems and ergodic theory within the region, with an emphasis on promoting increased diversity in these fields. Jangada Dinâmica, a five-year project initiated by Yuri Lima, a mathematician at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), encompasses a range of activities. These include four advanced study summer schools, the recruitment of post-doctoral students based at the UFC who are encouraged to visit other institutions in the Northeast, and the organization of the VI Brazilian School of Dynamic Systems in 2021 in Fortaleza, along with workshops every two years. The UFC aims to serve as a hub connecting a significant number of recent graduates in the Northeast with distinguished international researchers.

The project was conceived by Yuri Lima, a mathematician affiliated with the Federal University of Ceará (UFC).
