The “Operações Negras” (Black Ops) podcast tells the story of Math, a young Black with a gift for mathematics who works alongside his teacher, Creuza, as an educator in a homeless shelter. His life takes a turn when he is wrongly imprisoned due to a justice system facial recognition error that misidentifies him as a gang member.
In the hostile prison environment, Math forms an unlikely bond with MC Ritornelo, an aspiring funk singer. Ritornelo represents the disproportionate number of Black people caught in the temporary detention of Brazil’s racially biased criminal justice system. Over seven episodes, each under 10 minutes, we follow Math’s diary as he navigates this challenging reality. The narrative is punctuated by mathematical formulas interwoven with the vibrant rhythms of Brazilian funk, creating a unique and compelling tone for the narrative.
