Mathematics

Mathematician Gonçalo Oliveira, a Benfica soccer team enthusiast, is like many Portuguese natives from the Lisbon neighborhood. His passion for mathematics was kindled during his third year at Portugal’s Instituto Superior Técnico. This institution is also where he earned his master’s degree in mathematics and applications. He further pursued his education at Imperial College London in England, where he obtained his doctorate in pure mathematics.

His academic focus is the exploration of mathematical objects through the lens of physics. As a professor at the Fluminense Federal University, Gonçalo splits his time between Rio and Lisbon, professing his affection for both cities. A history enthusiast with a particular interest in the Roman Empire, he is an avid reader of works by George Orwell and Fernando Pessoa.
