“Kimsakocha, a Páramo at Risk” is a documentary that reveals the connection between the Andes and the Amazon through the complex water cycle and its importance as an environmental service for millions of people in Ecuador and the rest of the continent. Scientific research on the “flying rivers,” the vegetation, and the interconnectedness of Kimsacocha’s groundwater is providing new evidence about the functioning of this water system, which is vital to the Cuenca region—the birthplace of the “El Quinto Río” citizen movement, which emerged in response to the Loma Larga mining project in the páramo.
It had the scientific collaboration of Anthony Barbosa, Clarice Saldanha, Kathleen Mahra, and Larissa Verona, students of The Training Program in Quantitative Ecology.
