The Voice of Science at COP30: Planetary Science Pavilion

At COP30 in Belém, Serrapilheira was one of the partners of the Planetary Science Pavilion, represented by Marina Hirota, one of the program’s curators and a member of the scientific advisory board supporting the COP30 Presidency.

Led by scientists Carlos Nobre (Science Panel for the Amazon) and Johan Rockström (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research), the pavilion was a pioneering initiative in COP history, positioning itself as “the voice of science” at the summit. Inside the pavilion, scientists monitored negotiations in real time, sounding the alarm that scientific recommendations were losing ground as the draft texts evolved.

Beyond supporting the scientific program, Serrapilheira participated in the pavilion’s communication strategy. The Institute played a role in press relations, teamed up with Amazônia Vox to produce journalistic and social media content, and partnered with three prominent content creators from Northern Brazil: José Kaeté, Larissa Noguchi, and Mariana Disse.

To help frame the summit’s debates, we released a series of preparatory videos with Marina Hirota. Available on our social media channels and on YouTube, these videos explain basic concepts for COP30, such as the 1.5°C limit, adaptation and mitigation, climate justice, and climate finance.
