Paraíso Contaminado
Science outreach / Podcast

“Paraíso Contaminado” (Contaminated Paradise) is a six-episode podcast (40 mins each) that delves into the devastating 2019 oil spill off the coast of Brazil, the largest in tropical ocean history. Drawing on 18 CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development)-funded research projects, the series explores the spill’s impact on marine ecosystems, including beaches and reefs.

The episodes examine the far-reaching consequences of this environmental disaster, from the contamination of marine organisms to the persistence of pollutants in affected areas. Through interviews with fishermen, doctors and local authorities, the podcast reveals how the tragedy has affected coastal communities. With a regular host and contributions from scientists, the narrative weaves together scientific insights and human stories to provide a comprehensive and engaging exploration of this environmental disaster.
